Mobile Recharge Guide

Last updated: 30 July 2026

Prepaid recharge looks like one button. Underneath it there are plan types, two different kinds of validity, 22 telecom circles and a settlement chain. Understanding those five things is the difference between paying ₹3,588 a year and paying ₹2,899 for the same benefits.

What actually happens when you recharge

A prepaid recharge is not a single event. Four parties are involved and each one can be the reason a recharge is instant, delayed, or reversed.

  1. You pick a number, an operator and an amount or plan.
  2. The platform (Paybeez) validates the number against the operator, reserves the amount, and generates an order with its own unique ID.
  3. The aggregator forwards the request to the telecom operator over a licensed connection and returns an operator reference.
  4. The operatorcredits the balance or activates the pack and confirms. That confirmation is what turns your order “Successful”.

Most of the time all four steps complete in under ten seconds. When step 4 is slow — typically during a plan migration or a network-side outage — your order sits in Processing. That is normal and it is not lost money. Paybeez keeps polling the operator and settles the order either as Successful or as a full reversal.

Always keep the Order ID

Every Paybeez transaction has an Order ID and, once the operator responds, an operator reference. If you ever need to talk to your telecom operator directly, the operator reference is the only number they can trace. Both are on the receipt — open any transaction in your history and tap Copy.

Plan types, decoded

Operators use their own vocabulary, and it is deliberately confusing. Here is what each family of plans really is.

Plan typeWhat it gives youExtends validity?
Unlimited / ComboUnlimited voice, a daily or bulk data quota, and a daily SMS count.Yes
Full TalktimeThe full amount is credited as main balance, usable for calls and SMS at per-second rates.Usually no
Top-upMain balance only, after taxes and charges — so ₹100 credits less than ₹100.No
Data add-onExtra data on top of an active pack. Useless if your base pack has expired. No
Validity / STVBuys days of incoming-call validity, sometimes with a small talktime.Yes
Annual / Long-term84, 90, 336 or 365 days in one payment at a lower per-day cost.Yes
Entertainment / OTTA combo pack bundled with a subscription such as a streaming app.Yes
ISD / International RoamingOutgoing international minutes or a roaming pack for travel.Pack-specific

The most common expensive mistake

Buying a data add-on when the base pack has already expired. The data is credited but you cannot use it, because data needs an active service validity underneath it. If your pack has lapsed, buy an unlimited/combo pack instead — not a data booster.

Validity vs data validity

These are two separate clocks and almost every billing complaint comes from confusing them.

  • Service validity is how long your number stays active for incoming calls and SMS. When this runs out the number eventually enters grace, then deactivation.
  • Data validity is how long the data allowance lasts. A plan can carry 90 days of service validity but only 30 days of data.
  • Daily quota resets at a fixed hour — usually midnight — and does notcarry forward. Unused 1.5 GB today is gone tomorrow.
  • After the daily quota is exhausted, speed is throttled (commonly to 64 Kbps). You are still connected; you are just slow.

Rule of thumb: for a number you only use to receive OTPs and calls, buy the cheapest long service validity plan and ignore data entirely. For a primary phone, buy on the basis of daily data.

Operator and circle

India is divided into 22 telecom circles, and prepaid plans are priced per circle. The same operator can offer a different plan list in Bihar and in Delhi. Two things follow from that:

  • The circle is decided by where the number was first issued, not where you live now. A Kolkata number stays a Kolkata number in Mumbai.
  • If the detected operator or circle looks wrong — common for ported numbers — correct it before paying. Paybeez lets you pick the operator and circle manually whenever automatic detection is not confident.

Wrong operator = failed recharge

A recharge sent to the wrong operator is rejected by the network, not silently absorbed. It comes back as a reversal, but that round trip can take a couple of days. Thirty seconds of checking saves that wait.

5G plans

“Unlimited 5G” on Indian networks means: once you are on a qualifying plan, 5G data does not count against your daily quota — while you are inside 5G coverage. Three caveats worth knowing:

  • There is usually a minimum plan value to qualify. Cheaper packs stay 4G-only.
  • Outside 5G coverage you fall back to 4G and the daily quota applies again — so do not buy a smaller daily quota just because 5G is “unlimited”.
  • Your handset must support the specific 5G bands your operator uses in your city. A 5G phone is not automatically a 5G phone everywhere.

Choosing the right plan

Work through these four questions in order.

  1. Is this a primary or a secondary number? Secondary numbers almost never need data. Buy validity, not gigabytes.
  2. What is your real daily data use?Check the last month in your phone’s data settings. Most people who buy 2.5 GB/day use under 1.5 GB.
  3. Do you actually watch the bundled OTT? If you already pay for that app on another device, the bundle is not a discount.
  4. Can you commit for longer? Compare cost per day, not sticker price. See Save Money on Recharge for the arithmetic.

When a recharge fails

There are only three real outcomes, and each has a defined path. Nothing stays in limbo.

1. Failed immediately

The operator rejected the request — wrong operator, invalid number, or a plan not available for that circle. The amount is reversed to the source it came from. If you paid from Paybeez Points, the points return; if a gateway was used, the reversal follows the gateway’s cycle.

2. Stuck in Processing

The operator has not confirmed yet. Open the transaction and tap Refresh status— that re-queries the operator live rather than showing a cached value. Most pending orders settle within a few minutes; the outer limit is the operator’s own settlement window.

3. Debited but not credited

This is the case to report. Open the transaction, tap Raise complaint, and choose “Amount debited, recharge not done”. The transaction snapshot attaches itself to the ticket and you get a ticket ID immediately. Bharat Connect complaints are resolved within 30 days, and in practice far sooner.

Do not recharge again straight away

If the first attempt is still Processing, a second recharge can succeed alongside it and you end up with two packs. Wait for the first order to settle, or raise a complaint — do not double-pay to “force” it.

Porting your number (MNP)

Mobile Number Portability lets you change operator and keep the number. Two facts that matter for recharge:

  • You must have been on your current operator for at least 90 days before you can port again.
  • Right after a port, automatic operator detection can lag behind reality. If your number recently moved, select the operator manually for the first recharge or two.

Unused balance and unexpired packs do not travel with you. Port at the end of a pack cycle, not the beginning.

FAQ

Is a ₹100 top-up worth ₹100 of talktime?

No. Top-ups carry taxes and processing charges, so the credited main balance is lower than the amount paid. Full Talktime plans are the ones that credit the whole amount.

Can I recharge someone else’s number?

Yes. Enter their number and confirm the operator and circle. The receipt stays in your history under your account.

My daily data ran out at 6 pm. Can I buy more?

Yes — that is exactly what data add-ons are for, as long as your base pack is still active. The add-on tops up today’s allowance without disturbing your plan.

Why did the plan list change since last month?

Operators revise prepaid plans frequently and per circle. Paybeez pulls the live plan catalogue from the operator each time, so what you see is what is currently sellable for that number — not a stale price list.

Where do I find my past recharges?

In your dashboard, under History. Every row opens a full receipt with the Order ID, operator reference, timestamps and status, and you can raise a complaint from that receipt.
